To locate and negotiate access to existing public and private photographic collections, acquire, restore and inventory all kinds of photographs produced by residents of the Middle East and North Africa between 1860 and 1960, including portraits, landscapes, art, commercial, industrial, snapshot, medical, and police images.

To establish the necessary documentation on photographers, research their biographies and working methods, promote the visual material in the Arab world as well as in the West.

To support contemporary visual production and research of photographers and video artists in the Arab world, organize conferences and workshops, and long-term setting up a visiting artist and lecturer series.

The Foundation bases the selection of photographs for its collection on aesthetic, artistic, cultural, and historical criteria, regardless of genre. All images produced by Arab photographers or residents of the Arab world are of interest. Works of some photographers, previously scattered in various cities will be collected to allow a clearer understanding of their work.
The Foundation's collections will permit scholars, artists, and the public at large to shed light on artistic and cultural currents that emerged in the region during a period of intense social, economic, cultural, and political transformation.
