The Foundation's researchers meet studio photographers, photography collectors, and others who are likely to have produced and/or preserved photographic works. The Foundation works in three ways to preserve and conserve the works of interest: it asks for the works to be donated, deposited, and in rare instances it buys photographic collections. At his request, a copy of the donated pictures is given to the owner whose name is mentioned each time one of his images is used.

The Foundation restores and preserves the images in its collection. The images are cleaned and conditioned, and are preserved in a room that prevents further deterioration of prints and negatives.

Some of the images in the collection are digitized and entered into a database to facilitate research and viewing.
